Potential Casting
The eponymous hero of the series is Nadya Alliluyeva, herself, nicknamed “Totochka” who is 27 at the start of episode one. Nadya is funny, clever and idealistic and determined to make a life for herself despite her unhappy marriage.

Her nemesis is her husband, the leader of Communist Russia, Joseph Stalin, nicknamed “Koba” who is 51 at the start of the first episode. Stalin is a jovial host who likes practical jokes. Brought up by his single mother, he also loves the idea of family... unfortunately he is also a genocidal tyrant, a fact Nadya finds it increasingly difficult to ignore.

The children’s nanny and Nadya’s only real friend and confidant, is Alexandra Bychkov, nicknamed “Baba”, 42. Baba is very street smart and much more diplomatic than Nadya. Even so she manages to survive Stalin’s Great Terror because of the love for her felt by Stalin’s daughter, Svetlana.

These three live in relatively modest apartments in the Kremlin surrounded by the political leaders of the USSR and their wives and families... People like Molotov, Stalin’s second in command who remained loyal to the bitter end, even when his boss had his wife, Nadya’s friend, Polina, imprisoned in the Gulag for a decade. Bukharin the charmer and darling of the party and Baba’s favourite, who Stalin des-spiced. The young obedient apparatchik, Krushchev, who would later become leader of the USSR himself and would try to sell his old boss down the river of history. Then Stalin’s drinking buddies Kliment Vorisholov, Sergo Ordzhonikidze and ‘Uncle’ Abel Enukidze, who were all eventually slaughtered by their former pal.
All of them living an almost communal domestic life in relatively modest apartments in the Kremlin, while simultaneously taking complete authoritarian control of one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen.
